Just started watching a BBC production from 2012 called "The Dark Charisma of Adolf Hitler". It's a three part view of Hitler's popularity from the 20s on. So far, I've only seen part one. Seems pretty good. Has anyone seen it? If so, what are your thoughts?
Hello Lou, I saw this series about 2 years ago when it was on Amazon Prime, I thought it was pretty good, and pretty thought provoking as well. There were times where it was kind of hard to think Hitler was an evil person in that series, that sounds wrong in so many different ways!
Evil can be awfully banal. When I worked in the prison system I was struck by how people who had done some really awful things could be, in some ways, likable. If you really want to understand Hitler's hold on the German people you have to understand the psychological principal of "transference". It may have been less of who/what Hitler was than what a great number of Germans subconsciously desired.
I've watched all of: The Dark Charisma of Adolf Hitler by Laurence Rees Actually this is one of the worsed documentaries by Laurence Rees that he ever produced, just check the reviews on:- Amazon.co.uk:Customer reviews: The Dark Charisma of Adolf Hitler Leading Millions into the Abyss [DVD] Personally it was watchable, but not what I would expect from Laurence. I'm not sure if it was rushed or what, but when you compare it to Laurence's "Auschwitz - The Nazis and The Final Solution", "The Nazis - A Warning From History" and "World War Two: Behind Closed Doors" which to me are the best you can buy for interest and information, all with high recommendations, "The Dark Charisma of Adolf Hitler, does not compare.
I got to watch it this weekend while my wife was out shopping on Black Friday. Though I was trying to watch my daughter, I did pay pretty good attention to it. I didn't really take away anything new from it. Nothing I haven't already read or seen in another documentary. I was more impressed with the spectacular areal shots of Germany and Austria. It was worth it for that alone.
I hear ya there. Watching docs, especially on the Third Reich, are a tough sell when the kids are running around, lol. Can't focus on them and don't want them to catch much. My son does make me freeze the frame when he spots a tank though.
