it is another aniversary of the sinking of the hood, let's honor the crew of the mighty hood, that like to showed the flag of the empire, R.I.P.
and don't forget the BISMARCK, who sank today two mighty ships and two good crews. let them rest in peace
Here's a question: If HOOD's deck armor had been strengthened as was planned during the interwar years, would this have been enough to prevent her blowing up when hit by the salvo from BISMARCK?
I think the answer to that is a definate maybe. Since no one can be 100% sure where the hit that killed her struck it's impossible to say for certain.
but then we have another question: how come the germans won?, they were undergunned, 8 biggies and 8 mediums against the british 18 biggies, the result is very ilogical, :-? even in war simulation the bismarck is send to the bottom of the sea,
idd, after five minutes the Hood was gone, reducing the britisch strenght + in the opening phase, Hood and PoW had mistaken Prinz Eugen for the Bismarck. + after the sinking of the Hood, PoW was hit on the bridge, killing everybody exept the captain. that's probably a good sing to call the battle off and get the hell out of there + it was PoW first mission with a crew that wasn't fully trained, don't expect a good BB of the PoW on that time
but some of the german shells failed to detonated, that saved the PoW. but then we can see the overconfidance of holand, not permiting the suffolk and norfolk to participated in the main event, perhaps that could help to avoid the tragic end of hood, so we can say it was a lucky shot? or it was an event, accident or tragedy waiting to happen?
Dud shells on PoW: I believe you are referring at that famous underwater hit? If that shell had gone off as it should have, it wouldn't ever reach PoW. About Suffolk and Norfolk: Holland tried to surprise Germans and giving orders to Suffolk and Norfolk would have revealed his position to germans.
The two ships Lets honor the crew of the Brismark. Because most of them who abandoned ship and were hoping to be rescued by the British, didn't because the recue ship(s) left with only about 150 crew of the Brismark(I cant't remember the excat amount), but the Brits left because they thought there was a U-boat in the area, so lots of the crew of the Brismark died in the water. Let us remember them, Private Mic von Krate
Re: The two ships True enough, but WW1 had taught the RN (and everyone else) that if you get a report of a submarine in your vicinity, you get underway immediately. According to one of BISMARCK's survivors, they all understood this, but still felt angry about it. I can understand that, but I daresay that the Germans would have done exactly the same thing, had the roles been reversed. I also think we should remember the crew of HOOD. Are any of the three survivors still alive now?
