"A Dambusters veteran who helped Britain's most heroic pilots complete their daring mission to destroy dams in the heart of Nazi occupied Germany has died aged 99.
Horace Robertson, known as Jock, worked as ground crew supporting the famous 617 Squadron which targeted Hitler's industrial heartland, focusing on the Möhne and Edersee dams costing the lives of 53 British servicemen.
When Mr Robertson decommissioned from the military he went to work as a cobbler and only retired last year following seven decades of running a shoe repair shop in Edinburgh.
Mr Robertson died on January 7 but his daughters said his death was peaceful.
Great-grandfather-of-four Jock rarely spoke about his experiences in the Second World War, where he worked as an electrician in the RAF, until about eight years ago.
Last year he was able to watch the classic 1952 film Dambusters in the cinema - and was inundated with requests for selfies from the youthful audience."
