Some members have made thoughtful and well-reasoned postings in this thread, but I'm afraid that I cannot make any sense whatsoever of the last one.

Martin, I can say that as the internet average age goes down, we will see more of this from the new members of the forum. They are used to the economy of text messaging, rather than communicating in complete words and sentances. I don't know how those of us who are older and stuck with our literary handicaps are gong to deal with it.

I agree that illiteracy seems to be a World problem, however Forums like this one have nothing to do with 'texting' ; instead they rely on members' ability to express themselves coherently to others.

While that is true Martin, we cannot be suprised that it carries over. Those who are serious about being here will come up to speed.

I as a non-native writer make an effort to spell and punctuate correctly. Is this too much to ask of those born to the language?

Yes, they look ugly but, wow, they would cause problems - a bit like a pain in the ass and it's never-ending, thus still a pain.

I think he means it looks ugly but still effective.
