The first of January will afford all French men and women an opportunity of showing that they are unanimous in grief and hope.


For the majority of the people of France, directly or indirectly oppressed by the enemy, such a demonstration must, of necessity, be silent. But, for that very reason, it will be all the more impressive.


On the first of January next, from 2 to 3 p.m. in unoccupied France, and from 3 to 4 p.m. in occupied France, no French citizens will show themselves in the streets of our towns and villages. Only the enemy will be abroad.


On the first of January, from 2 to 3 p.m. in unoccupied France, and from 3 to 4 p.m. in occupied France, all French citizens will stay in, at home and elsewhere. They will remain behind closed doors, either alone or with friends and relations. During this hour of meditation, all thoughts will be centred on the coming liberation of France. It will be the Hour of Hope.


In all parts of France, everything should be done quietly and resolutely, in order to give immense significance to this mute protest by our trampled country.
