Hundreds of thousands of families were reunited for Christmas in 1945 after the long and lonely years of war. See some wonderful homecoming images on my Wartime Wednesdays blog post called I'll be Home For Christmas.

While your stories are primarily about Canadians, much the same happened to US soldiers. My father joined the army in early 1942, and spent nearly 3 years overseas. He returned in late 1945, married in May 1946, and I was born the following February. I have tried to imagine his feelings then, but I have utterly failed. Your pictures and comments helped a bit.

the Norman Rockwell's are well remembered and well done....and still, the boys are welcomed home, and will be in future years, as in the years long ago.....great article here as it touches the homefront with the servicemen...as we see the wars and military are not only the tanks, aircraft, ships, blood, etc ...but also the civilians
