I read the news headline today about the passing of Academy Award winner Maximilian Schell. I will always remember him best for his intense portrayal of attorney Hans Rolfe in Judgment at Nuremberg (1961). He was also the iconic Hauptmann Stransky in another great WW2 film Cross of Iron.

He always lent a certain dignity to his roles in WW2 films. So many movies in the 50's and 60's portrayed German soldiers in a very cartoonish fashion - the evil Nazi, etc. Schell never did that. He was in great demand, so he must have just turned down such roles.

I like the way he play LTG Bittrich in A Bridge to Far. A very convincing portrayal in a great movie.

He certainly was one of the first to portray nazis as actual human beings, rather than the usual cannon fodder/evil genius duality so common right after the war.
