He was found somewhere in the early seventies with his Arisaka rifle and the shredded remains of his uniform; he had indeed lived in the jungle since the end of the battle for Iwo Jima, in the belief that the war wasn't over. That's about all I know.

Neither Okinawa nor Iwo Jima were jungle islands.
The last Japanese on Okinawa surrendered in 1947.
The only hint I can find on Iwo Jima indicates the last Japanese surrendered in April 1945. the island was delcared secure on March 16 1945. Iwo Jima is eight square miles of volcanic rock.

A Japanese 2nd Lt. surrendered in the Phillipines in 1974.

I read a couple months ago (WWII History magazine i think) about the japanese resisting up to the 70's.
1975 i think appeared the last one? I'll have to dig among the magazines again.

Are you sure of that? The last surrender of a Japanese soldier I read about was the one on Guam in 1972.

The stranght of the infatry depends on the stranght of the leader!
Strong leaders make strong infantry...when we talk about machines is not the leadership its the new technologies!!!
So i think if it was all about infantry Germany and USSR had the power to rule on the others...Stalin and Hitler were unique Leaders...also Musulini was great inspiration for his soldiers...

I think the atoll the japanese held out the longest was on Pelilu, where it took around 70 days to end organized resistance. U.S. general in charge said it would take 3-4 days, guess thats what you get for under-estimating your enemy ;) .

I can tell you the canadians cave the germans a run for their money in Italy, Belgium, France , and Holland. There was also Hong Kong , even though they lost their was no chance they could win in the first place,, they still held out for quite a while.
