Since no-one else wants a go, it was (obviously) from the Indian Mutiny (or 1st War of Independance, depending on which side you were on  )

The unit was the 9th Lancers. I believe the name was given by the Indians, in awe of their exploits sticking pigs, sepoys, sowars etc :p

It is not a case of not wanting a go, it's simply that I have no idea of the answers.

Please don't be deterred from continuing this most interesting quiz.

Ossie strikes again, OK David, one for you.............
"Tally Ho, No one loves a fairy when she's fourty" As George said to Anne in 1715.
I realise it's a bit criptic David but you're good at that!
9th. Lancers, part of 2nd.Armd.Brd. of 1st.Armd. Div. now as 9th/12th Lancers.

What are Lancers supposed to do with their lances?

    I don't know, some people!

No sense of humour some people, never seem to get the point! unlike the Dehli natives.
Any way David, don't rest on your laurels just because you got a Rings question correct, get on with the one above.

    Tally Ho! Methinks Cavalry.

George & Anne 1715. Methinks King George & Jacobite rebellion. (But I didn't think that, that King George married an Anne, so I might be on the wrong trail).

Put the two together & you get Royal Cavalry. So, with my convoluted logic (& little else), I'll guess Household Cavalry Regiment.

You're trying hard, a few clues just for David, Tally Ho, think foxhounds! and what's the 'fourty' got to do with it? You're close with George 1, after Queen Anne. Nother clue, a leaping horse!AND you've done it before!!

    Now I'm thoroughly confused!!

Foxhounds. There was a Regiment nicknamed Monty's Foxhounds. It was a Recon Regiment & therefore possibly Cavalry in origin. I just forgat which one. I'll have to look it up.
'Fourty' not 'Forty'. is another conundrum 40 RTR spring to mind.

I may be close with George 1st. But I'm none the wiser.

A leaping horse. (Ferrari)! and I've done it before, are just too cryptic for me I'm afraid.

I'm not even in a position to have another guess. :-?

So close David,'Tally Ho' ok foxhounds.
    ' Fourty' ok again... 40th.RTR.
Queen Anne named them the 'Queens' but George 1st in
1715 renamed them the 'Kings' I wonder why?
Their cap badge had a leaping horse on it , the only
'leaping' horse on any cap badge.
The 'Kings' Liverpool regiment were 40th. RTR.
Now I believe 'The Kings Regiment', amalgamated with
    the 'Manchester Regiment' in 1958.
Here are a couple of badges whilst I prepare another!
I am not sure but believe they wore the 'Leaping Horse' on the black tank berets'......and, 'you've done it before'! who had me re Monty's Foxhounds on 'This or That??

Is it one of the Black Watch Battalions?

I never knew that the 40th Battalion Royal Tanks were the Kings Liverpool Regiment.

    Of course!

    HLI (Highland Light Infantry)
You can see the "whistle" clearly, but the "pig" is just visible at the bottom of the badge

Now why a Highland Regiment has an elephant on its badge, I do not know, unless its a very poor interpretation of a haggis!

Bloody big Haggis! but quite correct.
Now the Royal Highland Fusiliers, amalgamated with Royal Scots Fusiliers in 1959.....unless changed again in the last big Scottish balls-up!!
The elephant comes with the battle honour.."ASSAYE" in 1803.
    see details below.
OK, next one , which is the only infantry regiment with the battle honour
    "BALACLAVA"?

Well, I know the 93rd (Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders -- deceased) were there (The "Thin Red Line") , but I didnt realise they were the only infantry with the honours, although with hindsight...
