My Grandmother lived in London. She was 13 when war broke out, and quickly found herself sent of to Kent all summer to pick Hops and other crops, to keep the country in food. Like so many on the homefront this essential service has never really had the praise or publicity that the "Fighting" folk have, but nevertheless I am very proud of her
We used to have a women who would give us a lift to school - she only died last year. She was part of the land army and got a licence that allowed her to drive any vehicle that she wanted. The food effort was an immense feat in the second world war.
Women and girls really rose to the occasion when they had to whether by force or just because. They have worked to build something for women during that time, if you look back that might have been what caused women to want to do more and be something.
