Before I visited Kirknewton, I took a trip to Campsie old burial ground, Lennoxtown (just North of Glasgow) to visit this grave. Sorry about the quality, forgot the camera was on B/W.
In May 1941 Ju88A-5 M2+CK of 3 Staffel, Kustenfliegergruppe 906 was shot down over Lennoxtown and crashed at Newlands.
The crew bailed out, but Hauptmann Gerd Hansmann and Oberleutnant Werner Coenen were killed when their 'chutes didn't open. The other two crew members- Oberfeldwebel Ernst Langancki and Feldwebel Willi Muller survived and were captured.
Coenen's remains were reinterred at Cannock Chase in the Sixties, but Hansmann remains here at his family's request.
My late father was one of a Police search party sent from Stirling to help look for the crew, and after many hours searching found Hansmann and Coenen's bodies in the forest around Lennoxtown Castle.
