    This Italian website was posted on ww2Talk and has detailed maps of Italy.

    .:: Geoportale Nazionale ::.

    Just pan and zoom to the general area of interest, then click "Immagini" and double click the desired map scale. You will want to know the Italian names of the major cities -- Firenza (Florence).

    Detailed maps are required to read any AAR's or Unit Journals. Before I was trying to read these from the 337th Infantry, 85th ID, using Google Maps but getting no where.

    Still, with the Italian maps I like to transfer the localities to the Google Maps "terrain view" because the shaded-relief is so nice for "seeing" the mountainous terrain (see attached for 337th IR for 1 to 4 October 1944).

    For the location of the 85th ID on 1 Oct 1944 there is this map from the Green Books.

    Thanks for posting the link here. I've run into the same problem, especially when the AAR or Journal isn't very good quality. I'll have to brush up on my Italian, I suppose. ;)

    Yep. They either tell you where you're going or where you've been... and they don't talk back. :D

    Maps are good. My father went in at Salerno and stayed in Italy for the duration of the war. These maps arre helpful, but I wish I knew Italian.

    Thank you all for the Salutes

    I don't know Italian either and do not know any more about the features of that site than what I described yet it works great for me.

    I did forget to add that panning works by click-grab-move and zoom-in works by rolling my scroll wheel forward.

    For technical translations Google Translate works good enough, usually.

    I was able to pick out an airport at Bari and now wonder if that may be the same one my uncle Bill returned to after his trek with the Partisans? If nothing else it is interesting to use the different scales/forms.
