I've been meaning to show you guys this album for a while now. Unfourtunately, I'm having to put this album up for sale so I can buy a new computer - so I thought I'd show you some of the photos before it leaves my possession! The album follows a man in a Luftwaffe ground regiment, mostly whilst he was in France. Most of the photos have scribbles on the back, but I haven't managed to look at them all yet. Anyway, here are the photos: The front, a nice luftwaffe eagle with "war memories" printed below in German. Photo showing the senior officer addressing his soldiers. Paris - a photo of a memorial, and I believe the Louvre is in the background of another? More Paris photos - one of the Arc de Triomphe du Carroussel Eiffel tower on show! Photos of Grand Dalles (1) Photos of Grand Dalles (2) Can anyone identify that plane for me? I'm useless when it comes to planes... More Paris photos. Notre Dame top right. Camouflaged hanger in Dreux Four soldiers in Naples, Italy. Ligescourt Picture at the back of the album. Hope you have enjoyed!
nice album ! the aircraft is a He 111 by the way Dreux France was an important Luftwaffe night fighter base
The pictures were probably taken around 1940 and I suspect this is a KampGeschwader based near Dieppe and Dreux which participated at the Battle of Britain. Leave pictures are from Paris (80 km from Dreux) so easy to go to on a day trip . here are modern pictures of The Dalles cliffs , they would be great as now and then pics. Enjoy.
More info ! the small info called liege'scourt is in fact Ligencourt in northern France. This was a Luftwaffe base for the B o B for the Gruppe V(Z)LG 1 flying the Bf 110 which was there from july to Oct 4th 1940, so if you want to identify the KG which was ther eit was probably after that date (I suppose they were at Dreux before ) Document-49: Fighter Command Order of Battle Sept 15th 1940 pictures of what's left of the base in 2010 Crecy grange to be noticed this was use din 1944 for V1 storage facilities The base was initially built by the RAF , then used by the French until June 1940 and by the Luftwaffe from 1940 to 1944.
more details: I said Ligescourt was likely occupied by the KG after october 1940, the snow makes me think of the winter 1940/41 period. Besides I wouldn't be surprised if this KG moved to the Eastfront during the Summer of 1941 (I need confirmation though)
Thanks for all of the extra info Skipper! The person I bought it off said that the man was moved to Berlin prior to the Allied invasion and remained there until the end of the war. I'm not sure how accurate that is - there is a picture of them in Naples, dated 1943. There are actually quite a few scribbles on all of the photos but I can't make out any of it! I did just spot a plaque in one of the pictures with "L W B K 2/18 XVII - Zur Sturren 7(?)" written on it. Any ideas? The album has 120 photos overall so if I get time- I will post the remainder up.
1943 in Naples would be a perfect timing. Prior it was held by the Italians and later it was liberated by the allies. There is also a picture of a Christmas eve party (probably 1940). Zur S turren could mean Zur Schiess Türren. = to the shooting range (unless "S" means the S word and then it would be to the toilets...... ) LW = (probably Luftwaffe) B ( = Kreis ?) K (= possibly Kommandantur) so it would be to the Local Luftwaffe HQ
Haha! Bingo and thanks for the confirmation Erich, I was hoping it would come from you, it saves a lot time checking in the archives.
Thanks Ulrich, will get a picture sorted out shortly. So can we confirm that the man was from KG55? I'm curious as to why the highest ranking officer on show in the album is just an NCO. It appeared to me that this man was in a small group of soliders visiting bases and that they didn't seem to get much action. What was the likely purpose of this small group of soldiers? Reserves? Manual labour? Thank you all for your kind comments.
the Album may itself been under the care of an NCO and not a LW Offizier. also no even though we have found the He 111's unit it may jut be a candid shot and the truppen not apart of KG 55. From what you have posted personally I cannot confirm.
