Hello- I thought you might be interested in the story I have posted with pictures of my recent trip to Italy over on ww2talk. I have always wanted to follow in my father's footsteps and finally made my pilgrimage to the battlefields of Italy. There are lots of pictures of my visit, some of the Sicily/Rome American Cemetery and Memorial too. Hope you enjoy them! http://ww2talk.com/forums/topic/53517-my-trip-to-italy-may-2014my-father-ernest-illingworth-56-recce/ Lesley
Lesley Well done for both making the pilgrimage and then reporting back to both forums. Best regards ! Ron
Lesley, since you first mentioned to me your plans to take this tour I have been excited for you. Indeed, thank you now for taking the time to share it with us in thoughtful words as well as your excellent photographs and links to your friend's. Wonderful that you had the veterans accompany you and get first hand accounts as well and seeing Prince Harry !! what a treat I agree the military cemeteries in Italy are quite beautiful and I feel honored to have visited quite a few of them. You convey, quite well I would add, what it meant to follow your dad's route. So glad you were able to go and so happy you shared your trip with us. My apologies for having been a poor correspondent of late, I shall endeavor to do better. Gaines
I envy you, Lesley. A stunning trip with accompanying pictures. My father served in Italy with the American 5th Army. I hired a researcher to trace his steps so I'm doubly interested in your trip. Many of the places you visited are mentioned in the reports, although the 5th Army tended to stay along the west coast. He was in on the Salerno invasion, and went to Rome and north. Thanks for the post.
Thanks for directing us over, Lesley. I had a great time looking through the photos of your trip. Truly amazing stuff.
