No, technically, it is not a B-17. It wasn't a "G", but used to be an "F", specifically a B-17F-1-BO. The aircraft in question is the Lockheed Vega XB-40, it was a B-17F-1-BO (s/n 41-24341) before being handed over to Lockheed Vega for conversion, prototype for the YB-40 gunship that was based on the B-17. IIRC, this was the first use of the Bendix chin turret that would become standard on late model B-17Fs and B-17Gs(the only "real" success of the YB-40 project). This photo taken from a different angle would have been a dead giveaway
Correct! Your turn. Also I purposely labeled it as Flying Fortress because I felt it was quite obvious as to what the plane was based on so that much wouldn't really be a giveaway.
Well let me apologise mucker for thinking you were thinking we were fools....seems I am then....good one...You'll fit in well with us lot....
Good guess. The cockpit does bear some resemblance to the Curtiss C-46 Commando, but the Commando only has two engines, the mystery aircraft has four. View attachment 19005 This is the C-46 at this year's MAAM's World War II Weekend.
