I’m trying to identify an old movie I saw as a kid. In the only scene I really remember, a soldier is sitting in a room, contemplating suicide, before eventually grabbing a pistol, putting it to his head and pulling the trigger. There may have also been some scenes involving a gondola but I may also be conflating with another film. I’m guessing the it was 50s or 60s era. Does this ring a bell with anyone?

    "From Here to Eternity"?
It was in the book, I don't know about the movies.

When you mentioned gondola, I immediately thought of "Where Eagles Dare" with Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood. It was made in 1968. It's been awhile since I saw it, but I don't remember any scene with a soldier contemplating suicide and then committing suicide in it. The only suicide scene that I remember was when the mole jumped out of the airplane on the way back to England when he was outed. Could be wrong though.

I thought of "Best Years of Our Lives" but I haven't seen it in a few decades...
