Hi, I'm Gungrease; I'm new here, and I need help identifying a WWII Jap Navy Brass 2-piece dress sword belt buckle, and perhaps some background on it. Two pics attached. I recently got it locally from the son of a WWII vet father who had picked it up as one of the first naval medical units to go ashore in Tokyo just after the surrender. I cannot find anything on it on the internet, perhaps looking in the wrong places. My guess it that it may be an officer's buckle in a JSNL unit, an Imperial "Marine?" Is this a commonly-encountered Jap buckle? Rare/valuable? Also got two very nice same vet bring-back Jap samuari swords and a type 99 Last-Ditch Rifle, which will be future inquiries. I'd greatly appreciate any help anyone can offer. Thanks, Gungrease.
You might get reponses in this part of the Forums dedicated to Militaria. Militaria - World War II Forums And as a heads up the preferred term here is "Japanese" not "Jap".
I believe it is a Petty Officers sword belt buckle. The cherry blossom badge was used alot in badges of rank and even as a marksmans badge but the Petty Officers peaked cap badge and side cap badge (after 1942) were identical to your belt buckle.
