As some of you know, I mentioned that I would be heading off to college. Well now that I am going through orientation and classes will be starting soon, I will be having a more difficult time visiting the forum and posting. I will definitely keep posting I just won't be around as much as I used to . But if anything comes up especially with Mr. Geiser I will certainly update you all on that. Cheers , Dave
Good luck. Have a little fun while you are there but not too much. Those who say grades don't matter are the ones with poor grades.
Best of luck to you but remember hard work pays off !! Keep in mind what you would like to do in life and begin working toward it while in school. I spent most of my life teaching at LSU and Auburn University. Over 35 years I taught many many students and listened to thousands of hours about their life, I still miss those conversations and keep up with many of them today. If I can ever be of any assistance to you drop me an email.... Gaines gtblackwell@gmail.com
This will be an essential resource for you. You have to log so many "homework avoidance" hours each semester, so keep track of your time here.
Hey guys I really appreciate all of your kind words it means a lot . I've already started meeting new people and made some good connections with people. My classes start next week so I got to also start buckling down for that. @A-58: my major is history/social studies and get a certification for teaching history at either the high school level or college level.
Smiley, my wife taught English in High School, I taught architecture and history thereof. She normally had 4 to 5 classes a day, little time for research and her own development. I normally had a studio and a history or seminar class and was expected to grow and learn in the off time, which I did diligently. Generally there is financial support for graduate work . To soon to make a decision but keep it in mind in either case. My offer was genuine and sincere. Gaines
If you are going to try high school I'd recommend you find some faculty members to help you learn how to control the kids. That's going to be your biggest challenge in your first several years. I tried it for a year when I first got out of college and failed miserably. If offered a job in a middle school or junior high school, FLEE!!
My mom is a teacher and she always talks about how it can be hard controlling the kids especially since they are in the first grade. Doing that is definitely something I should do. Thank you Dave55!
I taught 7th and 9th grade social studies for 35 years and loved every minute of it. I would do it again. 7th grade was geography and 9th grade was European history. You hve plenty of time to make a decision. Take a variety of history courses and settle on the area of your greatest interest.
Here in Louisiana you can teach in the junior college system with a masters degree and in elementary/high school with a BA. I'm sure it's similar in other parts of the country. The pay is higher as well teaching in junior colleges and four year institutions. That is something you need to be considering, pay and benefits. I know that retirement is for the old farts at your age now, but let me tell you when you start closing in on the finish line it gets a lot more important to you. Bottom line is it's all up to you.
