I have been researching my family history for around 20 years and as part of that, I discovered that my Great Aunt, Winifred Alexandra Peters (nee Wootton) died during a bombing raid in the Blitz at The Old Palace School in East London. What I uncovered was a remarkable story of what is still today, the largest ever loss of life for the Fire Brigade at a single incident, 34 Firefighters sadly lost their lives that night.

Since then I have investigated the story and written a fully detailed account of what happened on that fateful night. The story can be found here:

The Old Palace School WW2 Bombing Part 2

I have subsequently built a new website that is dedicated to the memory of the 34 firefighters and I am writing a biography and life story for all 34 firefighters.

The link can be found here:

    Old Palace School Bombing

If anybody can help with further information or even possibly have a connection to any of the firefighters who lost their lives then please get in touch,

    Thanks
    Paul

Great work, Paul. And welcome to the forums.
Mind if I share the link with an ARP group on FB?

Thanks, William for your kind words, much appreciated. From a technical aspect, it's really very easy to set up a blog, if I can do it anyone can! You don't need any specialised skills or programming or anything like that, most blog hosting sites are packed full of plenty of free templates and themes that you can use. I used WordPress primarily because it appeared to be the biggest and best, others will have their preferences, but I found WordPress did everything that I required. Their basic package is totally free, but it does include adverts on your site and blogs, but it's a great place to start and you can mess about then with designs and layouts. I did this for a year and now pay £36 a year which has some additional features but the important thing for me is that it's add free. The best advice is to read as many different styles of blogs as you can, not for the content of the blog, for that layout and style of the pages, remember so many people just use a smartphone these days. When you think you've read enough go back and read some more! You can never view enough different layouts and designs. Where do you want your menus, what to include in sidebars there are a hundred different styles and layouts. Make a note of what you like when you look at other peoples blogs and just as importantly make a note of what you don't like in the presentation of a page. I hope that helps.

I have been gradually populating the website with more biographies over the last few months, some truly harrowing stories, but it is so important that their lives are still remembered.

The latest story can be found here.

The latest firefighter biography is listed below and contains some really poignant and important documents regarding the old palace school bombing

Progress has been steady, so far I have managed to complete 15 biographies of the 34 firefighters who died in this tragic incident, the full details can be found here on my website.
