Finally, after years of red tape, carrier Oriskany is sunk as artificial reef. http://www.pensacolanewsjournal.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060518/NEWS01/605180328/1006 http://www.latimes.com/news/nationw....jpg,0,7503786.graphic?coll=la-home-headlines http://www.strategypage.com/gallery/articles/military_photos_2006518218144.asp Rusty bucket, isnt she?
Sad ending to a proud lady. Many Korean, and Vietnam War veterans gathered to watch her go, "The Big O" is no more. (Senator John McCain was based on the Oriskany flying an A-4 Skyhawk if I remember correctly. 'Course he ended-up getting shot-down over North Vietnam.) Tim
Unlike the Clemenceau which the french can't get rid off http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/europe/4988664.stm Maybe they should sink that off the coast of America as well FNG
Well, at least she wasn't scrapped, like so many of her contemporaries were. To the best of my knowledge, not one of the INDEPENDENCE-class CVLs has survived, nor any of the large numbers of CVEs built during WW2.
I'm afraid you are correct. Unfortunately, it cost a lot of money to operate and maintain ships, vehicles and aircraft. The USS Alabama Battleship Park had an opportunity to take possession of the LST-325 but they didn't have the funds to display it. Most military parks only get what money they generate. Very few are government funded.
That's too bad about the LST. And you're right about the parks. When they replaced the teakwood decking on USS NORTH CAROLINA, they solicited money from the public to help pay for the project. Successfully, I'm happy to say.
those ships have a great history, they served their country,..... and in the end almost nobody gives a damm about them. it's a shame
