This was the second year running my family spent July 4th at the Gaylord Texan Resort. The best thing about the resort is the massive waterpark, which is so large I only visited all areas when I combined my visits from last year with this year. Despite Covid19, the annual fireworks display was still held which the kiddos enjoyed only slightly more than I.

Happy (very belated) 4th of July to the good Rogues of the WWII Forums!

    Otto...

Is the Gaylord Resort owned by the ex Winter Olympic gymnastics gold medallist Mitch Gaylord?

I saw him win gold at Los Angeles I think it was, along with Mary Lou Retton. Both of these athletes seem to have had their day and dropped out of sight. Mary Lou in particular was a household name, but simply disappeared.

Anyhow, have a great 4th of July....

    Heard it in the wind..
And I saw it in the sky..hi- ih
    Thought it was the end...
Thought it was the 4th of July...

I'm not too familiar with the history of the name. I know these hotels were around in the mid 90's and there is a chain of about a half dozen higher end hotels. I guess Mitch could be the owner & founder, but I suspect not.

I'll be going back to the Gaylord Texan for the 4th of July this year also, making it the third year running.

    "Gaylord Texan".

At school in the '70 & 80s s that would have made us laugh .

    Not now though of course.
    I'm not that childish.

Yes. I certainly laughed at the name. But Mitch won my respect with his sterling performance as a gold medal gymnastics man at the top of his form.

I don't think he would have had anyone laughing at him after that. I'm not sure of the origins of the surname itself, but I'll do a quick google search to find out and get back to you

Gaylord is a Norman French name brought to Britain during the Norman conquest of 1066. It's French original is GAILLARD. It means " happy lord", and actually has a coat of arms.

It's a fairly rare surname with one in every 964,000 odd people possessing it. It's blue blood origins probably mean that the family has a seat in the House of Lords, but I'm only guessing that.

Anyone remember "The Flashing Blade" on TV in the 70s ?
    It's in the opening scene.
