Wondering if anyone has knowledge of if there was any partisan fighting to stop the Germans from entering Florence.

In researching this, I'm finding a lot of information regarding when the Germans left Florence (blowing up the bridges) but nothing on when they entered the city.

    Thanks!

Never heard of the Italians attacking the Germans from passing through Florence. That would invite retaliation and why bother if Florence was declared an open city? BTW, that didn't stop the Germans on the other side of the river from shooting at the Canadian troops who entered Firenze/Florence.

Yes, I agree. With it being an open city, it doesn’t make sense. I know there was a lot of partisan activity. Just wanted to double check about the German arrival. Thanks!

The German Airborne unit/army was trying to find the Tito Unit so I think Tito was not trying to invade further to anywhere. Just trying to destroy Germn convoys/uits and stay alive..Just my view..

Tito was a clever man, you could say like Stalin. He eliminated his enemies in his country. Even when Stalin asked him to come and visit Moscow, he refused.as he knew he would not return. Clever and evil man. he kept the power in his hands whatever it took.

Makes me think of modern times when that Polish jet with the Polish government that mysteriously went down while en route to Moscow.

One thing good about Tito is that no civil war erupted during his rule. It smoldered instead and waited.

A British concern was that Tito would seize Trieste in 1945. Units were rushed there to protect it from the communists.

Yugoslavia is a mix of people. Croatians were with the Germans previously and unlike Finnish civil war, they fought against each other in WW2 blooodily.
