L-R Rank insignia for Technician 3rd Grade Technician Fifth Grade - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia Shoulder patch for Communication Zone Personnel - Com Z was in the rear and provided logistical support to combat units. Shoulder patch for Third Army personnel - This patch was worn by soldiers assigned directly to the US Third Army or it's HQ , as opposed combat formations that were attached to the 3rd Army. Usually these soldiers provided support functions such communications, logistics, etc. Service Bar (stripes), worn on the lower R sleeve, awarded for overseas services. Each indicates 6 months.

Collection of the previous, except for the far right (see below). The 4 bronze stars signify 4 campaigns he is credited with in the European,Middle Eastern,African Theater. What does the motto at the bottom say on the DUI? Might help to find it. It is not in my book that I could find, but it has only combat formations and I have suspicions that your father was in a service unit.
