I have a large group of items to a vet who served stateside with the 4th Infantry Division, then later overseas with the 101st Airborne Division. He was an amateur photographer, and took some pretty decent photos documenting his service. The photos below were all digitized from developed negatives, and were taken during boot camp at Camp Croft in South Carolina. The vet enlisted in November 1941, so I assume that these photos date to November/December 1941. Interesting to see them showing off their "new" gear.
I agree with the others, excellent photos, thank you for sharing. The dude on the open "shitter" brought back memories. There is nothing that will get someone over being modest quicker than coming back from the field and taking a dump with 40 other guys on open shitters. Twenty down one wall facing twenty down the other. "Damn, Underwood, did something crawl down you and die! How 'bout a courtesy flush." " Anybody done with the sports section. I have the funnies." "Damn Doc, did you hear Bigelow? That don't sound good. You might better check him when ya'll are done."
Thanks, all! @USMCPrice That's too funny! I didn't serve, so can't relate, but your description gives a visual I didn't need to have...
The open plumbing, including showers with no stalls, was intended to flush out gays. Supposedly they couldn't control themselves. Didn't always work.
