..yes ..very much so...minus exhausts and other external ancilliary equipment the mastodon is one great empty thick slab-sided steel box up close....Martin is welcome to it ....(more of a Panther man myself...)

Righto ! I'll start clearing some space in the back yard....it's still a Tiger, and it was there.....

( BTW, I told my wife about your wife's 'Longest Day' and she indicated a definite sense of feminine solidarity....:D )

Nice details. Is that part of a Porsche turret?

It is true that if you know where to look, you can find history at almost every corner here. They are digging a new road next to my home and they a found Roman camp, Gallic farms , Carolingian buildings and so on, just by digging with a few bulls. I saw it on TV , it's fascinating. WWII stuff is everywhere. Last week 500 kilo bomb was found near the city of Tours.

    It's a standard, late-model Tiger I Ausf. E turret....

ok thanks, the Porshe turrets were on the earlier versions, that's why I asked, I knowthis Tiger was used in 1944, but I was wondering when they stopped using Porsche turrets.

This is pick on Martin day!

Its ok for you moderators to post their photos, but when us plebs try it they get rejected due to size constraints (350k).

Tried to post a photo of Mailly-le-Camp Memorial last week, and was rejected.

    Woe is me!

    Za!....

.... what a little tramp you are!

a-a-a-a-a-n-y-h-o-o-o.... I loved the pics, and, not being overly familiar with the details of German armor, was quite surprised at all of the vertical faces... I thought the conventional wisdom was that sloping sides were more resistant to impacts.

    ...silly me.

Scarface, you are used to think in terms of Panther and later. If you look at Pz I, Pz II, Pz III, PzIV, almost all maisn surfaces are vertical or close to it.

This is in fact a very fair comment. Several German tank 'aces' ( including, I think, Carius as described in his memoirs ) are recorded as being distinctly unimpressed at their first view of the Tiger I.

The design was 'old school' ( ie pre-T34 ) but it did of course have the benefits of very thick armourplate and, above all, a main armament which outranged virtually anything on the battlefield.

The Tiger II ( 'King' or 'Royal' Tiger ) is more representative of later WWII tank design.

Just realised this thread seems to lack some frontal views, so here are a couple.......

...we're assuming, of course, that the small person was suitably chastised, and the metallic fragments have been confiscated and are now firmly esconced in the responsible adult's burgeoning artifact collection...

(.... I mean, it's only the RESPONSIBLE thing to do.... right?...);)

I also thought it was ineresting to note in one of the links that Poop provided that if the light sand color and the darker brown color were reversed, it would be a more accurate rendition of the actual camouflage scheme (ie dark brown splotches surrounded by a thin, light sand band, all on the dark green background).

    (....details, details....)

...still, a really neat piece of adult playground equipment.
