This was given to me by my grandfather. He was a B-24 pilot in WWII but I am not sure when or how he come across this. I have had it hanging in my living room for the last 9 years. Hopefully someone here knows exactly what it is. It is fiberglass and fairly light. Feel free to let me know if you need anymore information off of it.

Howdy Brian and welcome to the forum. At first glance it looks like a 500lb contact bomb but if it is made out of fiberglass, may just be a repro. How large is it? Will research more.

I agree Erich. The bombs usually had yellow rings whereas this one has white rings and again is lightweight and made of fiberglass. Perhaps used for aerodynamic testing of aircraft?

If you look closely at the rings they have a yellowish tint to them. They don't seem to be bright yellow though.

or experimentation. in use operationally all rings were erased. As a former B-24 pilot yes he could of easily mustered anything out of the weapons cache knowing the right personell which he obviously did.

Brian any word on your Grandfathers bomb group and his military career as several of us would be interested if the info is available ?

Great picture, so he was part of the 461st and was flying from Italy on a B-24.

He is a pic of a general purpose 224 kilo bomb (500lb) , I believe this is the one you show.
