Hey, i have no clue really how this works, But my family moved into this house 20+ years ago and we found this head stone in the woods. It's a WWII headstone with the name George Silva on it. He was born in February and died in the same month some 20 years later. I'm willing to guess that the memorial headstone means he died in combat, but we really have no clue. I've done some preliminary research and even PBS has done a history on george silve, but nothing has come up relating to this one. Any info as to where to look would be great. Questions/comments, email me: beck0266@metnet.edu

Can you post a picture? What are the dates on the stone? Where did you find it? With some more information, maybe we can help.

Here's the best pictures i could get. It fronts my father's vegetable garden now, so it's been browned with the iron of our water via sprinklers.

    Here's what it says:[IMG]
    George Silva
    Minnesota
    PFC MED DEPT
    WORLD WAR II
    February 15 1924
    February 14 1945

We live out in the country in minnesota, we found this headstone not long after we moved in back in the mid 80's. it was flat on the ground in the woods covered in leaves and weeds.

Thats about the best i can do for ya.

I searched through the NARA db. It shows no George Silva born in 1924 from Minnesota. Perhaps the headstone had an error on it and was not used?

Jeff, I did the same thing, but I also checked the SS Death Index and found a George Silva born 1924, died 1945 from Minnesota, but could find no other information.

That's pretty amazing. Do you have any further information? Unfortunately, the OP no longer is around, but we would appreciate anything you can tell us.

I found a photo and several documents regarding Pfc. George Silva on Ancestry. He was killed by a sniper on the Burma Road and was a member of the 18th Veterinary Evacuation Hospital.

I'm not going to post anything else and will wait to see if we hear from his relative, awfflmike.

As Lou said, this is amazing.

I've heard that this is his original headstone from Fort Snelling. He was later moved to a plot where his parents were buried so they could all be together.

I don't know where this headstone is now but we would love to find it. I don't know where it is or how it got there. Stumbling across this post today is pretty cool.

Have you tried contacting "MathiastheLight" using the address in post #1? It's old but he might still be there.

Would you be agreeable to me posting the photo and documents I found on Ancestry? I'm sure folks here would like to read about your grandfather's brother.

These were the military related items about PFC George Silva on Ancestry. I hope you get a reply from mathiasthelight and maybe the family can get the headstone.

Good find, Steve. I still don't understand how the headstone was lost. I hope it is returned now that the information has been discovered.

Here is his memorial page on Find-a-Grave: George Silva (1924-1945). This is obviously where he was reburied with his parents.

It would be interesting to check the title to the property where it was found. I wonder if it was owned by a member of the Silva family at some point.

BTW, the PBS history that was mentioned by the OP has nothing to do with this George Silva. The show History Detectives interviewed a former POW with the same name.

    Hey All,
Believe it or not, he found me. I was a first year in college when i got to posting this. We are currently working to return this headstone to the family. I'm blown at how many years later this finally got a return. I never expected so much, but am so glad to come back and find all this. Thank you to all of you!
