Yupper, he was going for the Kaiser Wilhelm look, not the later style popularized by Charlie Chaplin.

 

If I remember correctly, he started sporting the comic 'comb' mostache so that he could wear his gas mask properly in WW1. As for the hair, I have no idea. Maybe he needed the 'sweep' to cover a bald spot?

 

That photo has turned up in more than one book claiming to be credible history.

Why this photo should indicate anything unusual for the day and age is not clear; war fever was a very common malady. I don't think we can read too much into it.

After all, what kind of idiot would be present on an occasion such as that and openly go AGAINST the crowd? They would have been torn to pieces by the mob!

 

If you see this fake photo within its historical context then it has very special meaning. Allegedly, this photo was “found” in 1929 but was first published on March 12, 1932 in the Nazi party newspaper the “Illustrierte Beobachter”, the day before the presidential election, in response to Hitler’s opponents attacking Hitler over his flight from military service in Austria-Hungary and questioned his patriotism.

It was Nazi propaganda that has faked everything about Hitler to create Hitler's cult. This photo is one of many proofs that the German nation was manipulated to adopt the Hitlerism.

 

I just read this in an article last week.

In the 1928 elections the National Socialist received over 8000,000 votes. In the 1932 elections they received over 13 miliion. That's a rapid rise to power.

It was well known to supporters, opponents, undecided voters, everyone that Hitler volunteered for the Bavarian army on the outbreak of war, so there wouldn't seem to be much question about his German patriotism at that point, whether or not he was in a crowd. Nor would it seem to address the question of his dodging Austrian service earlier. This seems to be a case of some p.r. person leaving no stone unturned.

 

George I must admit, that was a fake too.

With his (roughly) 120 and his Parkinson, the photo would have been just one huge smudge of motion blur. :green:

 

I guess the right English word for such stuff is "Overkill".

 

There are a number of moves involved in that volunteering to the Bavarian section, first he had to get a "royal waiver" from the Austrian/Hungarian throne to do so, not that he wasn't willing to go to war and fight, just which uniform he was willing to wear. This was after his fighting the extradition back to Austria after his arrest in January of 1914 on "non-appearance" for conscription. His is a rather convoluted life as to military service, he felt that the Austro-Hungarian force was far too racially diverse, i.e. a " mongrel army" and he didn't wish to be involved.

He didn't really "evade" the draft, he was found physically unfit due to his childhood lung problems in the only examination he actually took. He did fail to inform the Austrian government of his change of address within the time-period allowed, but really thought he had done so. Oddly enough he wasn't that much of an open "militarist" until after the declaration of war by the German state.

Of course declaring himself "stateless" when he registered in Munich on his arrival didn't help his cause as per his arrest and short incarceration in Munich. Then again, "artists" were at that time doing that as a statement of their isolation from nations and states as "artists". As in; "I'm not a German, or Austrian, Spanish or French, I'm an 'artist'? " Remember the time frame itself as art was moving from traditional to impressionist "modern art" as expressed by Monet and Cezanne, whose talent Hitler couldn't match or approach. He was always going to be the non-talent he was in the art world at the time.

Its OK, I don't mind it at all! We all need a bit of humor every now and then, and besides. Isn't Hitler a joke on his own?

 

An interesting photo indeed. Reminds me of "Wheres Waldo"... How on earth did someone spot that little hooligan amongst all those people? And how long did that take?
