wow, it seems it is a samll world! but i'd still hate to have to paint it! hahaha
sorry, my attempt at humor! i envy you both Jan and Skipper, you have so much history where you live, not here, we have a knock it down and build new mentality! being such a young country the oldest thing we have around here is a few houses that are maybe 200 years old. nothing like over there! i have often thought about living somehwere in western Europe, i think it would be a great adventure!!

Yes, there is so much to show I would know where to start. Orleans is part of the Loire Valley which is Unesco world Heritage , so this will give you an idea. There are Chateaux , wine cellars and archeological finds everywhere . Patton liberated the city in 1944. Centuries earlier it was Joan of Arc.
I remember having visited some kind of a German monastry in Wisconsin that was from the 1840s and on the cross you could read "Wer an Mir glaubt wird Immer Seelig" which means. He who believe sin me will be saved".
About the Dutch near your home: If you need some Dutch festival places, I can recommand Holland, Michigan and the Klompen festival in Little Chute Wisconsin. But you'l probably already know these places.

Bigfun: In your country, not your zone:
• The Indians of the casinos of Las Vegas,
• The Code-Talkers, the Navajo People......
• Are very long ago, and subsist in our days.
And I you wish to live in Western Europe are very, very near from Za Rodinu:D

skipper: yeah i know them, but i guess i'm looking to see things with deep history, like you said of the Loire Valley, to see the place where not only the battles of WWII but Joan of Arc, to me would be fascinating! who knows after my visit i may decide to stay!!

Jan: good point about the Native Americans, i should have clarified, the 200 year old history of the white man!! i recently took a short trip thru the Grand Canyon area, could not get to the canyon itself as i was driving a semi-tractor trailer, and it was fun to talk with the natives who were on the side of the road selling their handmade wares. by the way jan i see you are interested in subs, i posted this in another discussion, kind of hijacked it, but i wanted you to see this, chances are you probably heard of it already!

Bigfun: In Spanish, I am express most adequated

[IMG]
No surprise that half of England and Holland is buying our houses and settling here for good.
that's interesting, there is a show here called "house hunters intl" and quite a few of the shows have been dedicated to people buying houses in france! quality of life is something i look for, here in the states, or at least this close to chicago, it's all about the $$$$$$. which is great is that's what you want, but i think there must be a better way to live!

Well I am not rich , but I have all I need and I don't really care about more €€€. We have something here called "Cultural heritage day". It's once a year, usualy on a weekend and you can visit privite chateaux, monuments and gorgeous governement buldings for free. There is so much to see that even if I went for the rest of my life I couldn't see everthing. Chateaux will organise turnaments with reenactors , there will be interactive activities, fireworks etc.. There is even a project about building a real medieval casstle with the methods used 700 years ago, without cranes, without concrete etc... The bricklayers are dressed like the workers were in the middle ages, and tourists may visit this place as an entertainement park. It's fascinating because thye are saving unique building techniques that would be lost for mankind otherwise. The project will take two decades or more.. Same thing with Lafayette's Fregate build with the 18th century techniques at Rochefort and that will sail to New-York in afew years like it did during the American Independence war. I visited the wharf and was fascinated. I didn't know some craftsmen still had the skills to to make these kind of ships.

In 2009 when you visit Holland you may have the strange deja-vu feeling as I have eveytime I go there, saying I'm "home". One day I was in a small village and knew exactly where to go from A to Z without GPS , whereas I'd never been there before in my life. It's a great experience.

You are really looking forward to walk into your ancestors' steps, aren't you? When you go to Groningen, I would especially recomend West Friesland and the famous afsluitsdijk which is a 32km dike with a highway on top of it and will drive you all the way through tthe Ijssel meer from Friesland to the province of Northern Holland. Don't miss the Delta works technology at Hoek van Holland which will show you how good the Dutch are to fight the sea. it's a huge computerized gate that will stop the tide and 200km storms and will only open rivers to navigation again once the alert is gone. It is so huge that it takes almost a day to close , it's rolling on rails under the water.

The good thing is that Holland is really small and there is less than 20km between Hoek van Holland and The Hague and Rotterdam is close too. Groningnen is farther away though, but you could go up via Amsterdam and cross the Dyke and go via Friesland.
