Hello. I'm a new member hoping to find out more about my yard sale finds. I have two hand stamps. One has a swastika with the word Berlin under it. It might have the letters NSDAP above it (National Sozialistische DAP), the German workers' party. The other has the Nazi SS totenkoph death head on it but I cannot figure out what the letters/symbols say. I have used my computer to flip the image so it will look as if it were on a stamped page. The heads of the hand stamps are made of a metal...maybe brass as they have a green tinge. I find these pieces of history fascinating and hope you knowledgeable folks can help me learn more about them.

I will need to see more details to confirm is these stamsp are genuine or not.

The second one is from a third Waffen SS Regiment and one particular Batailon ( second word = Bataillon ). I still need to decypher the first word

That was my guess for the last letters (BATALEON) but that was as far as I got. Here is a photo showing the handles. The lady I bought them from said her grandfather brought them back from Germany right after the war ended. I'd be real surprised if they were repros but anything is possible! Thanks so much for the info!

the spelling is Batailon. I think I have more. I think the first word is a name ending with the German declination "ger" so I still have to find out the first syllabe only.

So do you think they transposed the "L" and the "I" on the word "Batailon"? Do you have any idea what this old German font is called? I appreciate so much your help in deciphering this, Skipper!

Maybe you could use a "carbon paper" (so as to not foul the faces with ink) and make impressions on plain white paper so that what they actually "stamp out" could be read easier?

    Just a thought.

Hey, Clint. I tried the carbon paper method but the photos came out much clearer than anything I could get on paper. Thanks for the tip though.

Norwegian GebirgsJäger in the Waffen SS then? Wow that's the first time I hear of those . the stamp could be bingo, but I'd still be careful there are many fakes on the market.

Edit the Norwaegian spelling as compared to the German is BATALJON

I believe you're right, Milleniumgorilla! I can't believe how exciting it was to find out what the odd characters on this hand stamp were. What a great wealth of information this group offers! Thank you one and all!

No surprise in a world of fakes I expected that too. The only one I have has a makers coin on the top with name address etc.. in tiny letters, besides mine (From FRUNDSSBERG) is made in copper and so worn that it's hard to read

Skipper, the hand stamp looks very similar but the handle is a bit different and the letters are also different. I'm still convinced that these are not fakes but I'm a complete novice at these things. Any idea where I could get an expert to look at them?

common reproductions was one reply peggy, and I'm inclined towards that answer too, many have been made throughout europe, where there's money to be made? there are fake's, and a lot of WWII stuff too.. these items are a specialist field to be honest, and the two replies given? I believe, are only going to be supported as repros, ray..

you could get a third opinion by looking at european dealer sites. the key word in french would be "tampon allemand"
