After surviving a massacre in Malmedy, a location behind the German army in Europe, four American soldiers with only one weapon rescue the British pilot Oberon Winley (Kirby Heyborn) in a tree and they move together, trying to reach the allied forces and save a great number of allied soldiers from a German attack with the information got by Winley in his flight. While marching, each soldier discloses inner secrets to the rest of the group. Written by Claudio Carvalho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Based on actual WWII events, the award-winning "Saints and Soldier" tells the dramatic story of a small band of Allied soldiers trapped behind enemy lines with information that could save thousands of allied lives. Outgunned and ill-equipped, they must now battle a frigid wilderness and roving German troops to smuggle the critical intelligence back to allied territory. In mid-December 1944, Hitler's Army charges through the Ardennes Forest in Belgium, initiating the offensive that will come to be known as the Battle of the Bulge. The German soldiers open fire on the unarmed prisoners, in the tragic event now known as the Malmedy Massacre. Corporal Nathan "Deacon" Greer, his friend Gordon Gunderson and a handful of others survive the massacre by playing dead and escaping into the nearby woods. The small band of soldiers come across stranded British intelligence officer Oberon Winley, who has valuable information to be delivered to Allied forces, increasing the urgency of their already desperate situation. The group forms a fragile bond as they begin to trust each other. But the constant threat of capture, as well as mounting suspicions of a German sympathizer within the group, threaten to tear them apart. Now with few weapons, no food and a strained camaraderie, this tiny band must take on the unforgiving winter and a forest filled with enemy troops to fight their way back to Allied occupied territory. Four American soldiers fighting in Europe during World War II are separated from U.S. forces during the historic Malmedy Massacre. Most of their fellow soldiers are slaughtered by German forces, leaving them stranded and without support behind enemy lines.

I agree Saints and soldiers is an excellent film.. One of the lesser known war movies...

Proves to show that Independent films can be better than those big blockbuster hollywood movies with big shot actors..

    I just bought a cheap L/E ( 2 DVDs in a tin ;) ) copy of this in a closing-down DVD store.

Actually, it's not bad at all. Worst things first, this 2-DVD edition features a documentary about the Malmedy massacre. If you're hoping for objectivity, forget it . It starts in grand style by describing the opening of the Ardennes Offensive against a background of Stukas attacking (!) and quickly moves on to describe 'orders from the top that no prisoners were to be taken' and 'American POWs being gunned down by laughing SS men'. At which point I turned it off and almost didn't watch DVD #1, the movie itself.

But it's good. And it has the courage to show the 'Massacre' itself as a confused and bloody event ; much as it has been described in more recent books. Certainly 100% better than the nonsense shown in the 60s 'Battle Of The Bulge' movie. It's a faily low-budget movie but is well done, with convincing equipment ( a rather nice SdKfz 251 look-alike features prominently ) and, despite being shot somewhere like - I would guess - Montana, it captures quite well the slightly spooky Ardennes atmosphere.

Recommended - I'll keep it, but use part 2 as a Frisbee......

I dunno. The movie just didn't work for me. I think I was expecting too much, based on Private Ryan, Thin Red Line... When Trumpets Fade was really good (evil damn officer!). And of course, Band of Brothers.

I'm with NicNac, just did n't do it for me. Dull and bland to be honest. And that RAF guy's fake English accent got on my nerves after a while. A better film about soldiers lost in the snow (and also filmed in Utah) is A Midnight Clear http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0102443/
