Just saw a document on Swedish iron ore ships and Russian subs after them. The Swedish tried to figure out a way to find the subs fast and started operation Palmen, which included seals finding the subs and marking them for the ships to destroy them.

The scientist Valdemar Fellenius sat one evening at a restaurant together with his former classmate Gunnar Boalt and thought about training seals to hunt down submarines in the Swedish archipelago. They both agreed that this was a crazy idea that might actually work!

They placed a lot of money in this project and they started to build a secret base on Gålö, and 19 seal babies was flown from Bottenviken to Gålö. They were transported in black plastic bags.

Soon they started to train the seals to locate submarines... After a while did the Swedish Marine became interested in this project, and Boalt and Fellenius arranged a demonstration with a real submarine, "Ulven". The seals all found the subs and showed the location of it. The Swedish Marine liked what they saw, and joined the project.
