Ehrler joined JG 7 on 27 February 1945. His comrades knew that the old fire had been burned out of the gifted Ehrler. On 4 April 1945, he shot down two B-17s. Ehrler then reported he had run out of ammunition and rammed a third. Erhler did not return from the mission.

Just saw a document on which it was claimed his last words were " See you in Valhalla!". Just a story or....

Ehrler and JG 5 flying Bf 109G's were blamed for the lack of air protection for the Tirpitz and her demise. Ehrler was sick and heart broken, and once transferred into the Jet Kommando of JG 7 was never himself again, it is no wonder he literally gave up and ended his life with nothing more to live for, thanks to "Fatty" and all his brilliance
