I am about to sew a pair of SS collar tabs onto a tunic and I am wondering if the tabs are supposed to be parallel to any piticular side of the collar, or if it makes no difference.

Panzer, best bet is to look up some period photos, or original uniforms for the proper placement of the tabs

The backing of the tabs is made of a thick canvas or somthing. This makes the tabs pretty stiff, shuld it be like this? And am suppoesd to sew through it?

Not that im trying to sour your barrell of apples but, if those tabs are original? why are you wanting to sew them onto a tunic? Get good repos for that-unless your only trying to complete an original tunic?

Ah, thank God for that because, as a collector, i'd have to come down on you like a ton of bricks. Im one who believes in leaving things as they are-with rare exceptions to the case ;-))
