Well, it's been too long since last I posted, so here are a few new ships. View attachment 13889 I've posted a pretty hefty new batch of pictures (25, to be exact) in my photo album. The new ones start with this pair of Trento class cruisers and run through Ning Hai. I've written about it more extensively in my blog. Some of these things are even starting to look like real models. Who'd have thunk it? I hope you like what I have to offer, and I'll try to post some "in progress" shots of the same models later. Sincerely, David
Thank you, Ulithi. Am I misrecalling, or did you have a relative aboard a CVE? I have a few friends and relatives that come to my mind when I build these things. (My grandfather whenever I build a transport, for instance, as he was on enough of them all over the Pacific.) And someone here had a relative on a CVE that I'd like to remember. (Apparently my memory is even more out of shape than the rest of me.) Anyway, I'll try to get more up here more quickly next time.
I never had a relative aboard a CVE. My grandfather was on Kiska in the Aleutians and took some photos of them during the end of the war (I have them in my profile album here). Also, at a used book sale, I found a crewman's Catholic prayerbook (missal) from the USS Bellau Wood. I tried to find the family if they wanted it back, but had no luck. My grandfather gave me a photo of the transport that took him back to the states; USS Cherikoff. I always thought about painting it.Currently, I am starting a painting of the USS Denver, for my friend's grandfather who served on it. Like you said, it means more when you have a personal association with your hobby.
Nice model work. My father was a "grunt", but I'm always is awe of those like you and others who have some kind of talent.
It's only a small talent, and mostly it's just a practice makes perfect kind of thing. That said, thank you very much. I'm proud of some of my efforts. And rest assured, I have a deep respect for grunts, sailors, and flyboys alike. I'd like to start modeling marines one of these days as the money is available since my grandfather was also a grunt. (First Marine Raider Battalion and later the 6th Marine Division.) Of course I'm not quite sure what he'll think of this, but I hope I have the chance to find out.
The ocean is a battered old blue cardboard folder. The wear and tear looks great. I just wish I could find a larger piece of the same material. The "island" is actually a styrofoam "hill" I made for 20mm infantry gaming. It turns out the hills do a nice double duty as islands. I keep playing with seascapes. Never found one I was entirely satisfied with yet, though that folder comes pretty close, but for the limited size. And thank you, by the way. I always appreciate it.
