I'm not much of the religious type, but for those of you that are, I don't think a little prayer or two would hurt. My dad had 5-way bypass heart surgery about 6 years ago at the age of 50. On monday, he had a valve replaced by a bovine valve (thats a cow valve) and also his Aorta with a synthetic aorta. During surgery, he suffered a mild stroke, which wasn't apparent until after he woke. So far, it seems to be affecting his speech mostly. You see him thinking really hard, trying to find the words to say, but they aren't there. He is much better today, able to speak short sentences and remembers conversations from yesterday when he could only muster 1-word answers. It could take weeks or months for him to retain full speech, but he is improving, though he is using words we've never heard from him before. Its been really tough on my mom, who has been by his side the whole time, and she is really struggling since mentally he is only a shell of his former self despite the improvements. My older sister is with her too (I still have to go to work everyday) so some thoughts or prayers for his speedy recovery and strength for my mom would be greatly appreciated. -M-
Musso I am not the praying type, but I hope for your families sake your dad recovers well and his too. My dad had a stroke and his had affected memory and walking not the speech, but i do know others whose speech has been affected by a stroke and its painful to watch, but it does take time to get better. I hope he recovers from the stroke and the valve surgery.
He, you, and your family will be in my thoughts and prayers. I went through various similar things with my Dad, and later my Mum, so I know how hard it is to watch and how hard it is to not be able to make everything okay or the way it was. Take comfort from good memories, and find ways to enjoy time together, and relish every little improvement. Consider yourself virtually hugged.
Musso -- You and your family are in my prayers. I am sure your Dad is getting the best care possible and that he will recover in time. Be strong!
Musso, my thoughts are with you. My father suffered a stroke that affected his speech. It took some time, but eventually, he was able to speak clearly enough to be understood. With the advances in therapy since the early 80s, I would guess your father's chances are much better. Good luck to all of you.
Musso, while im not the praying kind I wish your Dad all the best for a speedy recovery you and your family are in my thoughts, all the best mate, Jason
Wow. Your father is a real fighter. I'm not religious but best of luck for you and your familly and I hope you'll find sunny days just around the corner Cheers...
Matt thanks for being bold enough to make this public, lost my Dad back in June to complications of his quad by-pass. My friend, Kath and I are praying for strength and courage and a clear mind during this very difficult time for you and your Familie. One thing I will encourage you to do is stay close as much as possible to support your mother and others that are surrounding your Father. Ask any and all questions of the doctoral staff if it comes to this. will tell you saying I love you to your Dad really helps and I say this with emotion as I type this out ................ Erich ~
Consider the positive thoughts "on the way". Best wishes for you and yours from Big Sky Country. My ex-wife had a double brain aneurysm while at work a few years ago, and ended up at the Mayo Clinic for her surgeries. Anyway, it took her about two years to get her speech back completely, but it did return with alot of work and determination. The one thing which bothered her more was her beautiful cursive handwriting became rather "scraggly", and more like my own. That took her as long to get back up to snuff as her speech. We may be divorced, but oddly enough we both still love and support each other.
