    Hello all,
I wanted to know where I could find details on each Soviet army unit and their approximate sizes (e.g. battalion = 500-1000 men, company= 100-200, etc.)

    Thanks in advance!

Also if anyone knows Finnish details during the Winter War, that would be amazing!!

I think I have something in my library, I'll look later tonight or this weekend.

You'll need to be more specific about the time frame. Soviet TO&Es varied widely throughout the war.

They change that much within the 100 days? Very interesting (I'm more knowledgeable on the politics of history and know much less about the military aspect of history) . I guess December and February if possible; January was not as crucial as those two months. Thank you!

Also if it needs to be specified even further, I guess the opening week of the war would be great (Nov 30-December 6th)

I only happened to notice this post by accident. I doubt many Finns in this forum do...

Anyway - here's some information about the sizes of the Finnish army units during the Winter War - and some info of the soviet ones too.

Great links! Thank you very much.

I am reading up on the Winter War and it is helpful to have an idea of what the authors mean when they say something like "Meretskov sent 2 battalions" or "Mannaheim sent 2 companies."

Exact numbers don't matter to me, but I come from a background of limited military knowledge and it helps to have this information readily available.

Excellent, thank you very much! Forgive my military ignorance, but does the information on that site mean that at the beginning of the conflict Finland had 8-9 divisions, each division containing approximately 14,200 men?

The other resources you posted certainly look fascinating, but I think I will try to get my head around the Winter War before I start looking past 1940.

Once again, thank you both for the assistance; I really appreciate it!

Correct. "For an army which never exceeded 200,000 men, Finnish losses were very high: 25,000 killed and 45,000 wounded."

    <SNIP>

"Field Marshall Mannerheim’s strategy was to concentrate his Karelian Army of 2nd Corps (4th, 5th, 6th and 11th Divs.) and 3rd Corps (8th and 9th Divs.) on the Mannerheim Line spanning the vital Karelian isthmus. 4th Corps (12th and 13th Divs.) was north of Lake Ladoga, with 5th Corps and Lapland Force covering the central and northern sectors."

Awesome thanks again. I'm making a quick facts sheet for this information so I can refer to it as I read.

It's fascinating just how much can go on in a relatively short span of time. Although I know the general army movements, I couldn't imagine getting my head around the details of something like Operation Barbarossa

Just nitpicking a bit: the Winter War ended on 13th March 1940.
