how about 140 of them !!!! Nearly 140 Spitfires discovered in near mint condition after being buried in the jungle for nearly 70 years in their original crates; wings folded back, wrapped in wax paper and covered in grease . . .

    Urban myth stuff.

The only news feed dates from Oct 18th. All other are forum posts.
140 WWII Spitfire fighter planes found buried in Myanmar

Leaves one rather suspicious that not one other new agency picked up the story.
It would have been headliner stuff all over the world.

Does seem that this article has dropped the figure down quite a bit.

Just to clarify - it is believed that digging has now started. The reason for a certain amount of cynici......er, caution...is that so far not one rivet has been produced as proof that these aircraft exist. Hopefully, this will very soon be remedied : even a single, crated Griffon engine would give the story much more credibility.

More than a dozen Rolls Royce-powered Spitfire airplanes were found buried in Burma.
The British version of Donald Trump convinced the 62-year-old finder to relinquish his claim.
Spitfire planes are both historically and intrinsically significant.

After a 15-year treasure hunt, a farmer and aviation enthusiast struck gold, uncovering as many as 20 World War II-era Spitfire planes buried in Burma at the end of World War II -- a find he may lose to the British Donald Trump.

Frightening, really - the story is all over the net. I guess it's all a matter of whether 'found' means that if you believe you know where something may be hidden - you've found it. Or whether you actually lay your eyes and hands on that thing - then, you've found it. Personally, where old aircraft are concerned, I'll go with the latter.......

I noticed the wooden framing beyond the packing crate. Would they have dug down, reinforced the pit with wood down to 40ft? Then backfill? I'd find that to be a lot of work for 140 planes...Hard to swallow. Would like some more info...If it's true- yeehaw.

I'm very impressed with the current radar imaging technology that can not only determine that the planes are there, but also their exact condition -- mint! Not bad for being buried 40 feet underground in a tropical rainforest. I wonder what was used as a desiccant? Must have been some potent stuff.
