Nah, very unlikely. Remember that the party al-Fatah, that Abbas is part of, started its career in much the same way as Hamas before "going political". It wouldn't surprise me if Hamas are forced to moderate their tone somewhat, with an influx of less fanatical members.

If they do, its a good chance they will split, as some look for dialog with Israel and some are the gung-ho "wipe out the Jewish state types". If they don't...well, much the same scenario.

As a sidenote, I see polls in Israel say that 43% are prepared to deal with the Palestinians even with Hamas running the government. That makes it pretty much fifty-fifty with the 46% saying "no way".

the mid-east is the cooking point and right now it is rather funny with Hamas and Fatah fighting it out for control of their meagre lands. Israel will not deal with either party anyway.

We had problems with them when I was there in 80 and it has not changed

what hair ? :D thought you both and the rest would be watching the news. end times are a comin maybe another 50 or so maybe sooner. It will depend now on how Israel responds, with violence or acceptance, but Fatah and Hamas are at each others throats right now and the Israeli's will not have anything to do with them as political parties

Erich, these events can be delayed if more people would wake up and see what's going on?

How can Israel accept this? Hamas has openly called for it's destruction.

They will never accept this turn of events.

Take it easy, Sharon knew how to do the smart thing when he pulled the settlers off from the Gaza Strip: give the Pals another chance to create a new mess while we are the ones who end up looking nice.

Too bad he went out of the picture, now that he was making up a new party to get rid of the old curmudgeons in Likud.

Who do you think has the most staying power, the Israelis or the Palestinians? Well, "staying power" seems to be quite an appropriate word for and Israeli settler, coming to think of it... [IMG]

I think it was Ezer Weizman (former Avia S-199 pilot in the 1948 war, then Chief of Operations IDF in the 1967 war, the President) who said: "Moses had to bring us into the only patch of land in the entire Middle East without a single drop of oil"!

See? I told you so ;) Yesterday the Israeli governement did not perform their monthly transfer of 35 Million US$ to the Palestinaian Authority, used to pay salaries to the Pal. civil service.

So there goes the livelihood of a large proportion of people whose only means of existence was their job from Pal. government.

The signal is clear: get yourselves someone who can talk to us or else. And it won't get any better soon.

There aren't many places in the globe half as complicated as this.

At the moment what you got out there are leaders who got power great wage packets and all the perks, who are happy to let things be after all they don't want to give up that sort of thing. The danger is when a dangerous person is elected, and wants war but for the moment that’s not the case.
