another expert had told me that the aincient submarine parked at Chicago's Navy Pier wasnt a real sub just a training ship to take the seaman from great lakes out for training. WRONG The USS Silversides, was indeed a real submarine, and a ww2 veteran and was the second highest scoring sub to survive the war and was the ship that the emergency appendectpoomy was performed whilke submerged durring a battle by a US Navy Corpsman with a butterknife!!!!
"silversides theres more.... the silversides having served with honor and 12 battlestars did not prevent the then mayor of Chicago and his city council from demanding retro active rent for her berth at NAVY pier after considerable discussion Silversides up anchored and sailed across Lake Michigan to a more hospitable home port in Michigan. I hope her crew mooned Chicago as they left
those sorry losers of chicago, they blew it  i can see that now is only politics and money, but the hell with them, i enjoy a lot from history, specially brave men and their machines
Chicago politicians are some of the worst. The current Mayor Richard Daley,nick-named 'King Richie' or 'The Emperor',does whatever the hell he pleases. He seems to think that Illinois is in Chicago instead of the other way around.
Actually, these idiots shot themselves in the foot letting the Silversides go. Navy Pier has been completely renovated over the years and the sub would have made a nice attraction.
That's okay with me; I have never been a fan of either Mayor Daley. Bloody corrupt machine politicians...and yet, the people of Chicago keep reelecting him. Yankees!
