Come to think of it, I read an account about an 8 man late war Panzergrenadier section defending an ambush position in the East.

The Unit was 8 men and split into 3 positions :

2 men (1MG42, NCO with a STG rifle and an MP40)

    3 men (1 MG42 + 2 assistants (their equipment undisclosed)

    3 men (2 STG rifle, 1 Mp-40)

After holding out for quite a bit, the entire unit was eventually wiped out by Russian small arms fire for the exception of the NCO, who managed to escape.

usually you think they would stay with one certain weapon ncos mp-40 lower rank k-98 or mg-42 don,t you think but I can understand they use whatever they can get their hands on

The account was written by the survivor, the NCO. He alternated firing between his two automatics. As the firefight came to the close, he and the other survivor manned the two MG42s.

As they were being overrun, they withdrew..and the other man was shot in the back..

Since their section was one or two men short, I'm assuming that his extra weapon was from a former member.
