Wonder if this is the Springfield 5 ammo cartridge and was it a problem for other armies as well and different cartridges or usual action to maximise your ammo? I recall reading that if you knew you had two bullets left and battle was round the corner soldiers shot the two bullets away so they could replace the cartridge and go to battle with five ammo instead??
