Hi Guys, Again a request for help. I'm doing research for friends who have adopted the grave of Thomas J. Hunnel (33659908) of Virginia (Norfolk) enlisted 29th of November 1943 Born in 1924 (no day or month know at this stage) Know is that he died being a POW (NAC ?) at November 6th 1944 somewhere in Germany Can anybody help ? Thanks
On 6 Nov 1944, the 112th Infantry was in the vicinity of Vossenack, Germany. There is a brief account of this action in the CMH booklet, "The Siegfried Line Campaign". This doesn't really give much of an answer to your question, but it's a start.
Okay so we know the 28th took part in the Battle of the Hürtgenwald, I have the IDPF requested so will only have been patient for a number of weeks (let's say a week of 40), see what that brings up. Do you guys in the states know if there is any government related institution that has more info on POW's. I don't know if these were communicated by the Germans to the US in WW2 or that the GI were just being classified as MIA ?
Over here his files on NARA search http://aad.archives.gov/aad/record-detail.jsp?dt=893&mtch=2&tf=F&q=33659908&bc=,sl,fd&rpp=10&pg=1&rid=8696546&rlst=8696546,4128582 files from Findagrave http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=hunnel&GSfn=thomas&GSmn=j&GSbyrel=all&GSdyrel=all&GSob=n&GRid=56300020&df=all& files from warmemorial http://warmemorial.us/mediawiki3/index.php?title=THOMAS_J._HUNNEL_-_Norfolk,_VA_(PVT)_WWII
Cas, Here's what Ancestry has: World War II Prisoners of War, 1941-1946 about Thomas J Hunnel Name: Thomas J Hunnel Residence State: Virginia Report Date: 6 Nov 1944 Latest Report Date: Nov 1944 Grade: Private Service Branch: Army Arm or Service: Infantry Arm or Service Code: Infantry Area Served: European Theatre: Germany Detaining Country: Germany Camp: 397 Status: Died as Prisoner of War, Not Above Cases Report Source: Individual has been reported through sources considered official. But, looking up Camp 397 at this site shows: http://www.pegasusarchive.org/pow/Stalag.htm Dates indicate open/closed. None of these seem correct. Stalag 397 - Petrikau - Poland - 11/42/03/43 Stalag 397 - Charkow - Ukraine - -/ Stalag 397 - Saporoshje - Ukraine - 03/43/04/43 Stalag 397 - Orel - Russia - 05/43/- I think this website seems to be more likely the correct camp/location: http://www.stalag17b.com/history.html
IDPF is reveived apparently the POW camp was located near the town of Düren Germany (north of Aachen). It even states the date and time of burial at the POW cemetary. I know have someone form the historical organisation of the county of Norfolk Virginia. See what comes up
Thanks for the update, Casper. I hope the historical group will be able to help fill in some missing information. Steve
Not sure if this will help, but I found a discussion on another forum about a Stalag at Arnoldsweiler-Düren. There are several pages of discussion, so I haven't read all of it. It may be the camp mentioned in the IDPF you received. Thanks for keeping us informed as to your progress.
