Thugs bashed disabled war vet for just 50c

TWO thugs allegedly bashed an 82-year-old disabled World War II veteran for 50c in a busy Sydney street.

Kristopher Cowie, 30, yesterday thanked a magistrate who freed him on bail after his alleged attack on Ernest Evans.
Cowie's girlfriend Tracey Prater, 29, who was bailed by police after the incident, cried tears of happiness at his release.
Cowie allegedly punched Mr Evans in the head in President Ave, Caringbah on Wednesday afternoon - allegedly hard enough to send Mr Evans flying into the gutter, covered in blood.
"He asked me for 50 cents. I said, 'No', and he went back and had a talk to the woman and he came back and went - bang," Mr Evans told The Daily Telegraph last night. "It was stupid, damn stupid ... all over 50 cents."
Mr Evans served in the army in Bougainville and for two years in the occupation forces in Japan.
At the time of the attack Mr Evans was holding his discharge papers from hospital, where he has spent eight of the past 11 weeks being treated for ailments including emphysema, a quadruple bypass, a missing kidney and a replaced hip.
He was outside St Vincent de Paul while his wife Una Evans was paying for a war history book and a pink piggy bank at the time of the alleged attack.
When Mrs Evans tried to defend her husband, Prater allegedly said: "Do not get involved or you will get what he is getting."
"All I could see was a person upside down in the gutter and on the road, legs in the air," Mrs Evans said. "I thought, 'Who's that?' and then I saw his hat and I realised it was Ernie and I ran over."
Unemployed Cowie was freed by magistrate James Coombs despite being on bail for other offences. Yesterday, in Sutherland Court, police opposed bail. When the magistrate freed him, Cowie stood and said: "Thank you, your honour."
The unemployed man was so unco-operative, "antagonistic and difficult", police were unable to get fingerprints or photographs, court documents said. He interrupted proceedings to say that Mr Evans, more than 50 years his senior, punched him in the mouth, before asking, "Should I be quiet?"
Police alleged in a statement of facts that Cowie returned with Prater after asking for the 50c and without a word "struck the victim with a closed right fist to the ... left eye and temple region".
"The force of the punch has caused the victim to fall backwards from his seated position over the back of the bench and fall to the ground."
Prater then "physically stopped" Mrs Evans, telling her, "That man tried to hit us with his walking stick", to which Mrs Evans courageously said: "I don't think so."
Mr Evans said he was touched by the help given to him by strangers, including shop keepers who brought him drinks and even a wet towel, and yesterday he returned to the scene to thank them.
St Vincent de Paul manager Carol Daly said yesterday that Cowie and Prater had called Mr Evans "every name under the sun".
"I heard the commotion. He has got blood coming out his elbows and his knees," Ms Daly said. "He is a war veteran. (Cowie) shouldn't have got bail. They should have thrown away the key."
Several local young men followed the two thugs as they fled, leading police to their location.

When I read stuff like this, I wish the idiots who committed such crimes could be transported back to the fall of Bataan to replace one of the poor fellows who was there.

I'd have loved to have also read that Mr. Evans got up out of that gutter, brushed himself off, and smashed his right fist through that punks putrid face. Fragging coward that punk is >:-((

This guy is on bail for repeated offenses, repeated.

In Texas, he'd be locked up, for his own protection.

I could say lots of things about this...but first:

"A nickel could buy you a steak and kidney pie, a cup of coffee, a slice of cheesecake and a newsreel. With enough change left over to ride the trolley from Battery Park to the Polo Grounds!" - Charles Montgomery Burns - The Simpsons

So perhaps the thugs got away with a bit more...Heh, I kid, I kid...it's just that that particular quote entered my head when I read the thread-title.

On a related note, I read last year about a 100-year-old Englishman who was beat up as he headed home from work (Yes, apparently he still works). Two teenagers decided to have at him but they didn't count on him being as fit as he was. He punched them in the face and successfully kicked at least one of the two youths in the stomach severely enough to send him crumpling to the ground, completely winded. The man thereafter went to the nearest police-station, covered in blood, to report what'd happened to the local constabulary.

    ---

But this is just insane. Fifty cents can't buy squat these days. If I read correctly, the attacker got off on a suspended sentence or somethin', right? Bloody hell. It's sentences like this that means people never learn. Sometimes I reckon we should go back to the 18th century when someone could be hanged for stealing a loaf of bread. Soft sentencing is making people think they're invincible. Why the hell would you hit an old man for fifty bloody cents? Or any amount of money? Nice to know that other people came to help him.

This is just sad. By looking at the punk in the picture, what do you think he would have done on Bougainville? I'll bet the smart money says hide in a foxhole, p**s all over himself and push his "buddies" to the front.
Jack-you sir have the right idea. He should be given a taste of his own medicine. That is the only way that punks learn.

    Take care,
    Salty

I don't know but, in this case, I don't think I would turn the other cheek and not do something. However, I think the Veteran showed much class in not striking back. That punk should be sentenced to a year of licking clean-that vets boots.

Hi mate, well said, and also some of these Judges who are in seat, should also be given a dosage of reality by being forced to speand a month or two with their noses in the dirt. Maybe afterwards, they would then be able to make better judgements when handling punks like that guy is.

We have the same problem here with many Judges. I remember one that wwas highly profiled on the Bill O'Reilly Show. I don't remember his name but, he was a Judge in I think Burlington, Vermont-who sonsistantly let hardcore criminals off with mere slaps on their hands. This one case I remember-was some bastich who had ben in and out of prison for most of it's adult life. Well, this sicko-was released and immediately went out and kidnapped a 13 or so yr old Girl. Tortured her for days, repeatedly raping her, beating her and keeping her nude and tied up with duct tape, and then making her stay in it's cellar-lying on bare concrete floor. This crime took place during the Winter-and Winters in Vermont-are not like days in the Sahara.

Anyway, this $%#&& was eventually cought, trid again, and STILL given a light sentence-by the same damned ""judge"" that tried it before-for a similar crime.
