Ginny Moore gave her husband, Marcus Comer, an American soldier, a silver identification bracelet before he left the States for Europe during World War II. Comer was killed in action near Villers-la-Bonne-Eau, Belgium in January 1945. Moore was recently contacted by Lorenzo Maierna, a Belgian police officer who had found Marcus Corner's silver identification bracelet in a Belgian fox hole, to inform her of his discovery and request information regarding Marcus Comer for a museum he intends to open.

Navy NewsStand: Navy Senior Archivist Helps Solve 57 Year Old "USS Eagle 56" Mystery

Fifty-eight years after the USS Eagle 56 sank, the US Navy reclassified the sinking as a combat loss after a naval historian and a Navy archivist gathered documentation and evidence proving that the Eagle 56 had been sunk just off the coast of Maine on April 23, 1945, the Navy's largest single combat loss in New England waters, by the U-853.

I enjoyed reading the article from Reuters: Germany, Russia probe the fate of WWII prisoners. The Germans and Russians were so good at keeping good records on everybody that I am sure there are many great stories to be discovered over time as the records are read and processed. It is just a huge time consuming task to go through all the papers and figure out what is worth keeping and writting about and what is unimportant. Also translating German and Russian to English is no easy task either ! But at least some people are out there trying. [IMG]

    True TA152.

I hope the archivists in Germany, Russia and elsewhere are making use of modern technology to scan the old records to preserve them in a digital format. Also, once everything is digitized, it will hopefully be possible for all parties to create a joint database to compare records.

Thanks for the original posting, Crapgame, which I'd almost overlooked.

Interesting news, indeed - here's hoping....

The Herald-Dispatch: Remember Pearl Harbor ... and the rest of the war; Descendants work to preserve legacy as WWII vets die off, 12-06-03

I found the story of Walter Carter, whose father Dr. Norval Carter was killed in Normandy in June 1944, especially noteworthy among the various stories recounted in this article. After discovering a pre-invasion notebook and post-invasion letters written by his father, Walter Carter found an account of his father's death written by Frank Wawrynovic, a wounded soldier his father had died trying to reach. Walter Carter and Frank Wawrynovic later travelled together to the battlefield where Norval Carter died, and to his grave in an American Military Cemetery in France.

Thanks for the articles, Crapgame! ;) It was good to know about all those personal stories.

I have a doubt here, didn't you have your general stars? What happened?

Palm Beach Post: History textbooks: Painfully true or P.C.?, 12-07-03

This is a great article in which Dr. Porter Crow, a World War II veteran with a PhD in education, reviews how current textbooks treat the war. ... "Crow flips another page, reads another paragraph. He closes the book, slides it across the table. 'I was there,' he says. 'It just wasn't like this.'"

Rex Barber was one of the fliers who shot down Admiral Yamamoto's plane in 1943. Barber and his fellow fliers were not acknowledged for their valor at the time, because their mission was made possible by US codebreakers listening in to Japanese communications. An Oregon legislator is seeking belated acknowledgment for Barber and others today.
