Germany terrorised the waters at the beginning of WWII with their U-Boats scouting the seas looking for potential victims whether they were armed or not. During the War a total of 2,640 ships were sunk in the Atlantic by 800 different U-Boats. Radar changed the course of the Atlantic War and the U-Boats didn’t have it as easy, a total of 994 German U-Boats were lost by the end of the war, 289 of these were credited to the Aircraft Carrier, 216 to all types of different ships, 62 of them were sunk by bombs from aircraft as the U-boats were on the surface, 25 by mines, the allied Subs sank a total of 18 and 92 were lost by other reasons like scuttled, engine problems, etc. In total 40,000 men served on German U-Boats during WWII. 30,000 never returned home.
