Wonder just how "unseen" they really are. "An incredible collection of photographs documenting the Dambusters raid and the heroes involved has been unearthed in "an archive belonging to a lauded Flight Sergeant. Leonard Sumpter, a bomb aimer, kept a personal scrapbook featuring press cuttings and photographs showing the airmen from RAF's 617 (Dambusters) Squadron at work and play during the Second World War. The images include Guy Gibson's Lancaster sitting on the runway with the ingenious bouncing bomb loaded underneath. Following the legendary 1943 raid, he won the Victoria Cross." You just can't keep the Daily Mail down ! I do agree that the photos of elderly gentleman in black ties taken long after the war are revealed here tonight for the first time. But I for one have seen all the wartime photos many times before. Let's face it, if any member of 617 Squadron had been seen wandering around Scampton with a Box Brownie in hand, he'd have been peeling potatoes in the Tower of London for years afterwards...........
If Steve McQueen had made a movie about the dam raids his sunglasses would fetch far more then this collection. Taken as a very nice set of photos and notes from a distinguished flyer it would seem their value would be much more. Martin, you should snap up the lot !!
Absolutely - as a personal collection of memorabilia from one of the original 'Dam Busters', it has great interest. But 'incredible' and 'unseen'.......noooooooooooo........
