Awhile ago I said I'd post some pics of these ships. They are on the following link. Hope you like them. http://www.pedg.co.uk/ships.htm
Hmm i thought the SS Jeremiah O'Brien was the last surviving Liberty ships but it seems that there are more? Atleast i do know it is the only active Liberty Ship in original configuration and so still seaworthy! Where are the others if any? http://www.ssjeremiahobrien.org/ http://www.ssjeremiahobrien.org/links.html a found something... According to this site there is another restored Liberty...SS John Brown?! http://www.geocities.com/jeremiahobrien/obrien.html http://www.liberty-ship.com/
Pompanito is an American sub out of the Balao class. here's a link http://www.uboat.net/allies/warships/ship/3119.html
My dad loved the photographs of the Liberty ships engine room as he worked on these ships as an apprentice engineer in the shipyards. Later he worked on some as a 3rd engineer after he "went to the sea" (as they say up here). He called them SAM boats - apparently a very common expression for them among shipyard and crew - as they made/supplied by "Uncle Sam". They remained in service around the world for a very long time and with some of the bigger shipping lines too, though a lot ended up as tramp steamers. Some of thge Union Castle Lines post war cargo/mail boats were ex liberty ships for example.
IIRC, the engine room of JEREMAIH O'BRIAN served as the engine room of RMS TITANIC in James Cameron's movie.
Now that you say it. Look at the O'Brian pics. Line 3, 2nd pic. Are the engines of the Titanic (camerons) not a close up of those things? Seems WW2 still has it's marks in Holowood.
when i was a 7th grader my parents took us to the old mare island sub base at vallejo ca. the pampanito was officialy closed to the public that day ..an old navy cheif took pity and let us board anyway ..i never again complained about my bedroom being too small after that tour ...it was giant in comparison to the captains quarters on the pampinito...and i guess us boats were considered quite grand by comparison to the subs of other countrys
Luxurious compared to British submarines - and they still are. I remember reading an interview with a US submariner who went abord a British boat for some reason, and he said something to the effect of: "I thought our living spaces were cramped, but those guys practically need a marriage certificate" If you can get better crew quarters without somehow reducing the fighting ability of the boat (how do you Americans manage to do that?), then it is a very good thing.
rum ,buggary ,the lash ...and a marraige certificate ? you brits are going too p.c. what happened to the viscious limey sea dogs of old ? arrrr
