Below is what I believe to be a Japanese cig case, that my grandfather took during the battle for Attu. After my uncle passed away my aunt gave me a box of his things. When I first saw it, I didn't know what it was and ended up putting it back in the box. It wasn't until sometime later, I was going through the box again and I looked at it a little closer. I was astonished that I missed it the first time. It has "ATTU" "May 13, 1943" scratched into the side of it. (it my be hard to see in the picture. I did my best but its to faint, it looks like it may have been scratched on with a knife or something.) This document is what leads me to believe it is a cigarette case. I know that the battle for Attu began on May 11, 1943, so I'm assuming that the 13th is when he captured it.
