I have joined today in the hope of finding out where to go to find this information. Last year I found tons of info on my grandpa who served in ww1. This year I want to find out about my grand dad Henry Ernest Philpott. I know that he was born in 1907 or 8 in Dover Kent. He was married with 2 small boys when called up. He lived in Gillingham Kent. He served at raf Cardington as an LAC helping to build the runway! I have his medals but alas no service number. Ancestry is free to access military records this weekend. I've spent 3 hours there today and found nothing. Any hints tips pointers or indeed in formation will be gratefully recieved.thank you .
You might like to try this enquiry on the sister forum dedicated to British and Commonwealth forces. http://ww2talk.com/forums/index.php Try the veterans agency, who hold personnel records of WW2 servicemen. The Next of Kin can request copies of service records. Ancestry do not have access to these, as they are covered by the Data Protection Act.
If you haven't contacted the MOD for his records, you should do so. They contain a wealth of information. This thread should direct you to the pertinent information. http://www.ww2f.com/topic/26956-requesting-uk-service-records/ By the way welcome to the forum. Please post again if you get further information.
